I would like to make a BASH shell script email me regarding its status (ie. it has errored while processing a file, it has finished etc.).
- This script will be distributed to users using Macs and a variety of Linux flavors. Is there a standard mail utility that most OS's should have? I have seen reference to mail and mailx. However I had to install them on my PC running Ubuntu 10.04. Installing isn't that big of a deal, but I would like to use a function that is compatible with the most systems.
- Are there any system configurations I must perform in order to use mail or mailx? The reason I ask is that I executed the following command:
at 1)My PC running Ubuntu 10.04 - I didn't receive any emails, and 2) My Macbook Pro running OSX 10.6 - I only received emails when using my university's network (ie it didn't work at home).
- Finally, will mail or mailx be able to receive email? I would like to be able to email my script back, have it parse the email, and perform specific actions depending on my response. Is that possible?
