Help needed for networking.
Hi guys just started learning network on linux platform.

Today i came across two commands ethtool and miitool. Both of them seems to do similar kind of jobs . Now i m confused what is the difference between them. please help.

Check the man pages of both. Just from reading those (don't even have mii-tool installed), I've gathered that mii-tool can query an interface for certain connection settings (speed, duplex, ...) while ethtool can do quite some more, including the change of WoL settings.

Does this mean miitool is now outdated and ethtool is a preferred way of dealing with network commands.

No, it's not outdated, but superseded. According to the net, it still can handle some older NICs that ethtool can't.

And one of the most important things to learn as an administrator is how to research things yourself, instead of relying on others to prepare everything for you.
