You dont have single quotes there, you have back quotes (the key to the left of the number 1 key). Back quotes allow command substitution, these are the `. Single quotes, \' do not allow command substitution nor do they allow interpolation. These are the 'what you see is what you get quotes'.

Example:

Single Quotes:
echo 'This Statement Will Print As it is, without $SHELL interpolation'

prints the following:
This Statement Will Print As it is, without $SHELL interpolation

Back Quotes
echo " `whoami` Is A Lion, Hear Him Roar!"
.........^back qu^otes

prints the following:
Google Is A Lion, Hear Him Roar!

thanks for helping, exam on tuesday.
could you help me with these please, I know some of them and if they are wrong could you please correct me. I want to try to learn them with easy simple words so it could help me in the exam.

1) > put in, e.g. file1 > file2, everything from file 1 gets put into file2

2) < opposite as above

3) && if condition on the left is true, carry on with condition on the right

4) & "and" condition on left and condition on the right

5) | dividing different pipelines

I dont know what the following mean (mentioned in mock guide)
