Reinstall Solaris?

Hey!

I'm new here, and excuse my complete lack of knowledge as a total newbie.

I've recently started a new job managing a nightclub, and we have 3 sun terminals installed that customers are able to use in the lounge area. However, we can't seem to log onto them as the old tech guy left on bad terms and refuses to tell us the root password for the server or any passwords that are able to log onto the terminals themselves.

I've tried resetting the password using all the tips I've found from Google but no such luck!!

Is it possible to reinstall solaris on the server without affecting the terminals or the connection? Would this fix all the problems? Or would the terminals not work as it needs a special sun application installed on the server?

Basically, if I reinstalled solaris on the server, would the terminals connect like they were before? Without installing anything else on the server?

Hope this makes sense?? I'm completely lost here!

Thanks in advance!

We should be able to help you reset the root password without having to re-install Solaris.

What is the make and model number of your server?

i assume the "terminals" are sunray systems... so after re-installing solaris you also need to install sunray server software and configure it... with no knowledge this could be a problem. so the password reset is maybe the better option. tell us what you've tried and where you fail and we'll see what we can do.

Hey, really sorry I haven't replied sooner, I've been so busy.

The make and model of my server: Supermicro SC512F-410B
More details: Super Micro Computer, Inc. - Products | Chassis | 1U | SC512F-410B

So I've tried resetting the password using all the help I can find of the Google. Basically, I've made a copy of the open solaris disk, popped it in, got to the GRUB loader, gone into single user mode and then for some reason it just runs the Live CD straight away and I get the operating system, but obviously cannot make any lasting changes as it's running from the CD??

I've tried all sorts of things from Google and nothing seems to be working.

I've followed this too and this didn't seem to work: My Tech Blog - Gautam: Reset Linux Root Password Using The GRUB

Any help would be greatly appreciated, please excuse my total lack of knowledge Smilie

Without using the LiveCD you created, can you get to the GRUB menu? It should automatically appear after you power on the system. You may have to press the ESC key a couple of times immediately after you power up to get it to appear. One of the options on the GRUB menu should be Solaris failsafe. Can you see this option?
