I'm trying to change a "." in a file name with a "_"

I have tried;

Code:

sed -e 's/./_/g'

However this then replaces the entire filename with a load of "_"

For example;

ls /usr/local/feed/service/customers/test1/configs/test1.httpsend | awk -F/ '{print $9}' | tr "[:lower:]" "[:upper:]" | sed -e "s/./_/g"

Without piping it through SED it displays;

Code:

TEST1.HTTPSEND

However piping through that SED command brings up;

Code:

________________

Can anyone explain why its doing this? I suspect its because I am trying to replace "."

A dot in regex means any character. Escape it to mean literally a dot:

sed -e 's/\./_/g'

Depending on your shell, you might not need SED at all:

$ FILE=blah_blah.txt
$ echo ${FILE/\/./_/}  
blah_blah_txt

I thought it would be something along those lines - thanks for the quick help
