looking for an OS

i have an old server a compaq proliant 1500 with right now only one processer a 166..but plan on upgrading.. can anyone reccomend a verision of Unix or linux that will run on this old system please and thanks.

Can you give some more info on your computer? like ram and stuff.. but i think almost any linux will run. Even if slow, it will still run probably.

NetBSD should run just fine, it requires a good Unix background though..but the previous poster is right, any Linux/Unix should do, they don't have as high requirements as say Windows or Mac OS X, I run latter, too so I know Smilie...

Before I forget, I ran SuSE Linux 6.4 on a Proliant once, single processor, 200 Pentium Pro, 128 megs..no problem.

dont need a lot of computing power to run Linux... but you will need a few GB of disk space to make it functional...

I would recommend at least 6gb to give you some room.

Linux on P1

While I could get eSmith on an old P1 (166MHZ with 96MB edo RAM, 4GB hd) neither Red Hat 9, Mdk 9 nor even SuSe 6.1 would install past the kernel.
