usage of 2>&1 while appending

Hi,

17 11 * * * /xx/yy/name.sh >> /tmp/cron.log 2>&1

The above statement is one of the crontab entries.

The crong log is getting appended everytime. Can anyone tell me the usage of "2>&1"?

Thanks.

Hi.

If you don't want to append, then change >> to >

2>&1 directs standard error to standard output. As you already redirected standard output to a log file, standard error would also go to this file (but it's appending because of >>, not because of 2>&1)
