rename filename
Hi, I am pretty new to this.
I have a condition where in I want to replace all files within a folder. All filenames with character "abc" would need to replaced with "xyz".
eg:
helloabcworld-->helloxyzworld
helloworld-->helloworld
...
...

Whilst I'm sure the above answers work perfectly, if you have it installed I like the rename command:

Code:
rename abc xyz *

Will replace the first occurennce of abc with xyz in all filenames matching the * wildcard.

help me if you may know, how can i do this command....
in current directory i must rename file
rename extension is given in command line;

$ rename txt doc
will be rename :
bbb.txt to bbb.doc
or
wihatxt to wihadoc

i must resolve that with command SED or AWK...

if you want only the extension to be changed, then use a dot along with it.

rename .txt .doc

But anyway the final question is not so clear.

I believe you also have to give the file(s) to rename. You can use wildcards to have the shell expand for you...

rename .txt .doc *.txt
