Not all versions of bash are equal, I guess:

> echo $((2147483647*2147483647))
1
> bash --version
GNU bash, version 2.05.0(1)-release (sparc-sun-solaris2.9)

The change must have been made somewhere between 2.05 and 3.2
Version 3.2 works. I added the line numbers to the original.
