run a script at startup
hi,

i am using rhel 5, and i wanna run a script as soon as the operating system open. How can i do this ? ( i was reading rc.d files but i could not understand exactly what are the run levels and where should i put the my shell script.


my script will be :

iptables -I INPUT -p tcp -m tcp --dport 8080 -j ACCEPT
iptables -I INPUT -p tcp -m tcp --dport 1521 -j ACCEPT

(Assume the name of my script is myscript)
1 – Copy your script into /etc/init.d folder
2 – cd /etc/init.d
3 – chmod +x myscript
4 – Add these lines, including #, right after #!/bin/bash or #!/bin/sh:
# chkconfig: 2345 95 20
# description: Some description
# What your script does (not sure if this is necessary though)
# processname: myscript
5 – chkconfig –level 2345 myscript on
# 2

Depending on your distribution, a simpler way to do this may be adding a line to run your script into /etc/local.start or /etc/conf.d/local.start . If your script runs once then finishes, this is probably better than putting it in /etc/init.d/ since the init system is meant for daemons that stick around.
