UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

Can anyone tell me how to reset the command prompt back to the original 'bas'h prompt as these have all been changed via the /etc/profile to add username and hostname but some are too long. I just want to run it in a local .profile to put it back.

In the local .bash_profile/.profile put the following:

PS1='\s-\v\$ '

You can also have a multi-line prompt if you use the BASH shell. Simply include "\n" without the quotes to have a break in the line. For example, on some systems I use:

PS1='\u@\h \@\n${PWD}\n>'

This gives me a prompt that looks like:

user@hostname 7:43 AM
/home/user
>

Since I work on multiple remote systems with various sets of credentials, I like to know where (and who) I am at any particular time. The time is probably not necessary for you, but I keep a log of my putty sessions and can match my commands to any system log events that may come up. I also have the full line to show my current path and I have a full line for typing commands.
