Changing directory with a script

I thought this was as easy as a piece of cake. But it has had me spinning. Here is how my script looks like:

Quote:
#!/bin/sh
cd /opt/xxx/dir1/dir2
pwd
# prints the correct directory
exit 0

When the script finishes and I pwd, I am back to square one. Any help? Thanks in advance.

I things you run your script like the following

Code:
sh script.sh

Try the following you will get the expected thing .

Code:
chmod 777 script.sh
./script.sh

Because when you run like sh script.sh then the script will run as a child process.so you can not get the expected thing . You need to run as a new process by giving a execute permission .

Small correction to karthigayan's suggestion. instead of ./script.sh use . script.sh
Its working....

see the example below

Code:
user1@AIXCOE:/home/user1> pwd
/home/user1
user1@AIXCOE:/home/user1> cat cdtest.sh
cd /home/user1/test
echo "current working directory in shell script is :$PWD"
user1@AIXCOE:/home/user1> . cdtest.sh
current working directory in shell script is :/home/user1/test
user1@AIXCOE:/home/user1/test> pwd
/home/user1/test
user1@AIXCOE:/home/user1/test>

Hi there,

Tried that didn't work. In fact I searched the forum before posting and found similar solutions.

What is amazing is - the same commands executed from command line works. In the script it doesn't Smilie

Thanks for help!

Hi there,

Tried this as well. Same result takes me back to my HOME.

Think there is something wrong with system settings. Not sure though what it could be. As these solutions have worked for others.

can you screenshot your screen (or paste it here) when you run it with the current directory and the directory after you run it so we can further check on what the issue is?

Your directory location gets lost when you leave the script's subshell. Tou can either source the script as explained above or use an alias that you put in your .profile
Code:
$ alias cdod2='cd /opt/xxx/dir1/dir2;pwd'
$ cdod2
/opt/xxx/dir1/dir2
$
