Change case of single character in pattern
Using UNIX tools, but not using GAWK (NAWK is OK), is there a more elegant way to achieve this:

Code:
sed '
s/_a/_A/1
s/_b/_B/1
s/_c/_C/1
rest of alpahabet
'

I want to change the case of a single character in each string of a text file. The character will be matched by regex '[0-9]_[a-z]' and only occurs once in each string, but I want the rest of the string to remain unchanged.

Something like this maybe:

$ perl -pe 's/(\d_\D)/uc($1)/e' bla.txt
asdf0_Aewbrt
ertz2_Bwwhdsfg
zuio1_Cwrthsfg
xcvb3_Dsgfbr4t

Thanks pludi.

I had used a series of sed's to split the pattern off from the string by spaces, manipulate it and then reassemble the string (delete the spaces). Not very elegant but it worked.

Perhaps this is an actual example of the potential advantages of Perl's brand of RE?
