Pronunciation Help

I've heard the UNIX function, "printf()", pronounced as "print ef" and as "print formatted". Which, if either, is preferred by the UNIX community?

also,

I've heard "bin" as in "bin directory" pronounced as rhyming with "wine" and as rhyming with "pin". Which is preferred?

Thanks.

I've never heard anyone call it anything but "print eff". People just call functions by their literal names usually to avoid confusion.

bin like pin I always thought but I doubt it matters. The computer really doesn't care. Smilie

Just for the fun of it:

I've heard "grep" pronounced "gee-rep" by experienced unix administrators when historically it should be "gee-rey-P".

We all know that "usr" is pronounced "ew-ess-arr" and that "user" is pronounced "ewsur" but an inexperienced user is pronounced "u-sure?".

Of course anyone knows that "tmp" rhymes with "dump".

And "yacc" rhymes with "tree".

Anybody can tell that "fuser" has two syllables and that "rmdir" has five.

Thousands of implementations of "ksh" could be found in the Seychelles.

Unix-aware Farmers will note that "uuencode" encrypts two female sheep.
