UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

Do you know what command I will need to use to find Average. I know that if I have 10 numbers and I add them together then devide the total with 10 I will get the average but I'm not sure how to put it down on a script. Can someone help with this.

when doing math in a script do it just like you would read it.

1) read in all the numbers.
2) add all the number
3) divide all the numbers.

problems of this nature are usually in the into to scripting/programming courses offered at various colleges and tecnical schools.

Can't afford college or training right now. I'm trying to learn UNIX on my own, and it's not as easy as I thought. It took me over a week to just figure out the script I did above. I'm currently a windows network administrator and want to switch to UNIX or Linux. I'm not used to working without an interface, but I find Unix very interesting. I HAVE TO LEARN UNIX NO MATTER WHAT. I find it more interesting than Windows since I have to work my brain just to figure problems out. In windows everything was easy so it's nice to work on something challenging for a change.

I'm not understanding how to find the average. Don't laugh but this is what I got and clearly it doesn't work. Does anyone know how to fix this.

ksh-2.04$ cat Average
echo "To Find the Average of 3 Numbers Please Enter 3 Numbers Below: "
read num1 num2 num3
if [ $num1 + num2 + num3=total ]
then
expr total / 3
fi
exit

Well then lets hope you paid attention during all those math word problems.

Run your windows apps from the command line, most of them have command line syntax. Use the run line, command, or an explorer bar to get yourself way from the point and click way of life.

Also, use the search function for this site. There are enough links to keep you reading for moons.

I hardly ever have to post a question because I can usally find it somewhere on this site, plus by using the search function first you won't be chastied at beginning of your post for not searching.

in ksh you can do stuff like:
((total=num1+num2+num3))
echo $total

In a ((...)) type statement you do not need the $ in front of the variable name.
