What are the contents of a symbolic link?

I wanna know "What are the contents of a symbolic link?".......
From google I dint get a good answer....that's why I posts here......

There are 3 possible answers:
  1. Whatever your course study material says
  2. Nothing, as it's just something stored in the filesystem information, not a file
  3. Whatever is stored in the target file, as that's what all syscalls will read
