Sounds disparaging to me.....
I stated a preference; I did not disparage it (i.e., say anything bad about it). (And I don't think anything could be more disparaging than deleting a post because it mentioned emacs.)

I thought the OP was asking for people's preferences, so that's what I posted.

Edit: In the poll above, Chris commented on vi:

(seems disparaging to most people...)

That was in a different context.

Anyway, my apologies if I seemed to disaparage [g]vi[m].

I think there should be a forum for discussion of text editors.

It's a large enough field (as can be seen by the 1,200 listed in the page posted earlier).

A text editor is a very important piece of software, and finding one that works for you can increase comfort and productivity considerably.

I use a text editor for everything from writing shell scripts to creating graphics. I use it for composing emails and Usenet posts, and I am using it now to write this post. All my web pages are written in a text editor, as are my crossword puzzles.

To follow up.....

I installed Aquamacs (Emacs for OSX) and found it OK; but I prefer TextWangler. The main reason is that TextWrangler has a built in secure FTP interface, so you can open, save, delete, etc. files on remote servers. For me this is one of the most important functions in a graphical editor.

For example, I can open TextWrangler and then open a file on a remote server. When the file is open, it has great syntax highlighting. I can make changes and save the file locally or remotely.

I wish that Notepad++ had this feature for XP....
