grep with quantity
Hello,
is there a way to find a list of all files in my folder that have 5 instances of the symbol | ??

Code:
grep "|" *.* would give me all files that have one isntance of |

Is there a way to modify this to find files with 5 or more instances of the symbol ??

Presuming you mean find all lines that have five or more instances of the symbol | (analogous to your grep example)
Code:
egrep '(\|.*){5,}' *

Is there a way to find all the lines that have at least one, but LESS than 5 instances of the symbol | ??

Or is there a way to count the number of lines that egrep returns as the answer to: egrep '(\|.*){5,}' * ??

I would think this should do the trick:
Code:
egrep '^[^|]*(\|[^|]*){1,4}$' *

-or-
Code:
awk -F'|' '1<NF&&NF<=5{print FILENAME ":" $0}' *

To count the number of lines in each file:
Code:
egrep -c '^[^|]*(\|[^|]*){1,4}$'  *

To filter out those with 0 matches:
Code:
egrep -c '^[^|]*(\|[^|]*){1,4}$' infile* |grep -v :0
