I don't think he's kidding, given that he said it's serious advice. If you start playing around on a live system without knowing anything about it, there are 2 possible outcomes:
  1. You're lucky and can work around your deficiencies in knowledge. Reaction time to incidents will be slower than with someone who knows what to do, but at least nothing will fail.
  2. You're not lucky, and everything will go up in a puff of smoke. Those responsible will get fired.

If there's more than one possible outcome of a job or task, and one of those outcomes will result in disaster or an undesirable consequence, then somebody will do it that way.
I'm willing to bet the second will occur sooner or later.

From personal experience, I can say that most administrators didn't learn most of their stuff from books or courses, but from real life experience, and that would probably take time and resources that probably neither your client nor your company is willing to put up for this contract.

Thanks for your advice. My company did setup a simulate system like my client place but I got no knowledge base how the system work. May be is best that you can give me some guide where can I find out some stuff that may be I can learn from scratch. Mostly like how to install the Sun solaris and oracle. My background knowledge is all on Windows platform.

If you really want to learn Solaris and Oracle you can do this:
  • Ignore anything you think you know about Operating Systems. UNIX isn't better or worse than Windows, it's something completely different.
  • Download OpenSolaris. Install it, use it, break it, and then try to repair it without reinstalling.
  • Now do the above without any kind of graphical interface.
  • Download Oracle (it's free for personal use)., Again: install, use, break, repair.
  • Try doing the above with raw partitions instead of datafiles.
  • As soon as possible, take the Oracle DBA courses.
With careful planning, you might be able to properly go through this stuff in 6 to 8 months, after which you'd probably be at the level of a Junior Administrator/DBA.

That will be a good idea but doea OpenSolaris and Oracle support any kind of hardware and what is the requirement. I hope you not try to tell me to format or do it in my working place cause the testing server got database inside for testing not suit to do formatting or installation. If got more manual guide will be more convenient for me to learn. I hope that I'm not that trouble you much.Smilie
