UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

hello to everyone,
i am writing a shell script in unix and i use the following command:

lnum= cut -f 1 -d : aa
passline=`expr $lnum + 1`
echo "$passline"

with the following command i get the value that is stored in the first field of the file "aa" and i save it in the variable "lnum". i am sure that this works because if i just echo "lnum" then i can see the numbers i want to see.
the problem is with the expr because when i run the script it writes me:

expr: 0402-050 Syntax error

i cannot find what is the problem because i search everywhere and i cannot find a syntax error in this.
do you have any suggestion?
