So would you give me the command I should use instead of the one that did not work.
I'm not sure I grasped what the links you gave me say. I'm totally new to untix and SSH.

The links I referred to were concerned with gpasswd not SSH, I would personally use the -G option when creating the account or else just edit the /etc/group file.
O'Reilly the publishers do an excellent book on SSH which shows you there is a lot more to it than just being a "secure telnet session":
