UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

Hello Friends,

I am a Graduate in Computers. I completed BCA degree this year. I want to make my career in UNIX. But, unfortunately I don't know anybody who can guide me. I am totally confuse because I don't know where to start and what are the future prospect in UNIX.

Please give your valuable suggestions.

you wanna start your career as UNIX admin or you just wanna learn the platform(i mean scripting and all those things)???

You might want to check your local career guidance centre. Your
old uni might be able to help, contact your tutor. With the state
of the economy, you may also want to consider doing a master
in something that's value added like project management, systems
analyst or security. You may also want to consider the professional
route e.g. databases (Oracle, MySQL, Postgresql).

A relevant question you may have to ask is in what computing
environment you would like to work. If it's in general business
or the public sector then odds are they will be using Windows.
Or if you'd like a changing environment then you may want to
consider an IT services company or consultancy that usually
use several operating systems and numerous skills.

However, larger businesses also use unix for more critical
applications due to its' reliability. You will most certainly
need complementary skills as suggested above as well as a
solid understanding of your chosen operating system.

In my opinion, you can't go wrong in choosing the unix platform
but it would be helpful if you knew how it fits into the grand scheme
of things.

To be very honest, I want to shift in US and one of my friend said that If you learn UNIX you will get tremendous opportunities in US that guy was working in Sun Solaris. He was my online friend. But now he is not in my contact becoz I lost my profile. Right now I am in Bangalore(India). I just want to know what should I learn in UNIX so that later on I can get a well paying job.

There's going to be 'a lot' of competition in the US for jobs in
the future. As well as the laid-off people, theirs going to be
several years of graduates looking for jobs too. Some of them
will have returned to higher education due to the recession.

You might want to consider finding a job in India first so that
you have something to put on your resume. It may help you
to find an area in computing that interests you. The company
may well sponsor you to do a master degree.

However, their are other options to the US. You may want to
consider Europe or even the Far East. Who knows, a couple of
years from now, you may have even started your own business
e.g. freelance or services.

But first things first, immerse yourself in your chosen field. Learn
the basics like scripting and poke around in the operating system.
Start exploring open source software, by installing and configuring
packages either from source or package management system.
Sooner or later 'all' unix systems need upgrades.
