Dear Friend,

You can use the following method also using the egrep.
The following code will give the correct output, what you want

The file contains the following contents

XXXX yyyyy zzzz 111
XXXX yyyyy zzzz 222
XXXX yyyyy zzzz 333
XXXX yyyyy zzzz 444

Code:
egrep "(XXXX .* 222)" file

The output is
XXXX yyyyy zzzz 222

grep

Using grep command itself we can do this one. grep "XXXX .* 222" You can give $STRING1.$STRING2 also. Like, grep "$string1 .* $string2" < file_name.

Code:
awk '/xxxx/i and /2222/'

use /regex/i for case insensitivity.

If you want with grep however use this approach

Code:
grep -i 'string1' infile | grep -i 'string2'

gives you the line containing both the strings.

Regards,
Gaurav.
