Echo " "
I am using AIX 5.1
I saw I had a cron Script written that uses this [ echo "" ] in the line. Could you tell me what this means I understand the rest of the line but this part confuses me .

without seeing the rest of the script... Id say it is simply a space added for readability...or of on a line by itself a blank line will be inserted.

Post the whole line if you can...

ok here it is
date >> /dump/rpt/viewlist.txt
ls -la /dump/rpt/view* |grep -v viewlist* >> /dump/rpt/viewlist.txt
echo "" >> /dump/rpt/viewlist.txt
I guess all together I not sure what this linie is tring to accomplish either.

I do not see any purpose of the echo "" in the script below other than to merely add a blank line.

generally files not ending with the EOF character or the EOL can be processed with the echo "" at the end. However your script below shows that the viewlist.txt cannot have this case.
so you may ignore this part of the script, I guess !!! Smilie

It looks rather clear that it is adding a blank line for readability. The next invocation of the script will continue to append to the same file. I would have done the same thing.

(Well, I would just use:
echo
rather than
echo "")

With that logic this echoes "echo". Question about echo!

echo `echo ` doesn't echoes anything. And it's logic. But echo `echo `echo ` ` does echoes "echo". What's the logic of it? the `echo `echo ` inside of the whole (first) echo, echoes nothing, so the first echo have to echo nothing but echoes "echo" (too much echoing :P):o (2 Replies)

Difference between using "echo" builtin and /bin/echo

So in my shell i execute: { while true; do echo string; sleep 1; done } | read line This waits one second and returns.
