I am not aware of any free DL for unix... Solaris used to have a "developers " version they made avaliable back in the early to mid 90s... but they discontinued it.
I got a version 7 for myself but never used it much, since I mainly use HPUX.
The problem with UNIX versions is most of them are proprietary (ie you gotta fork over cash to get them)
The only FREE version of UNIX is the variant LINUX... no flames please, over simplified description for times' sake.
There are over 50 different flavors of unix... Many *nix variants are free... BSD/Linux/FreeBSD. Many you can buy in a bookstore, like Redhat and Mandrake.
And to answer your original question, you cannot nerf Linux into unix... they are different, although subtle, operating systems.
Linux variants use many original UNIX commands, but it(they) are unique in many ways as well.
Hope this helps....
