Hi,

I'm not sure if I understand your question... use 'more filename' or 'less filename'...

Opening a file

thanks for your reply jsilva, I havent explained my question properly, basically I want to create a shell script that would allow me to open an output file. The each line in the output file is a record. How do I open the file and assign the each line to a variable x?

I would suggest using a new file descriptor (e.g. 3) so that your script can still use standard input....
Code:
while read -u3 x
do
  echo $x
done 3< file1
