UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

folks;
This might sounds stupid but i hope someone can give me an answer:

On my Linux SUSE boxes, i have 2 NIC cards NIC1 & NIC2. I always assumed that NIC1 is eth0 when i run "ifconfig" and NIC2 is eth1
but i noticed that's not always the case.

Is there a way or a command i can run to find out which NIC assigned to which eth?

Invoke ifconfig and write down the two HWaddr strings. These are the MAC addresses for the NICs.

On way is to remove one NIC and check for a label with its MAC address. There is usually a label with the MAC address somewhere on the NIC.

Alternatively if you are connected to a router, you should be able to figure out the MAC address of each NIC from the port it is attached to.

Alternatively install Wireshark, monitor one NIC and drill down into a source packet to determine the MAC address.
