Did you do the cold boot you had asked about? It has been several years since I did stuff with 4.2 but I can remember having to reboot stuff many times at various customers. Or when they called as a service call I would just have them reboot.

But after lpshut, did you check you had no more lp related process still running?

Go to /usr/spool/lp
rm FIFO SCHEDLOCK
then clear any lp* process ( you may have to kill -9 xxx yyyy ...)
And try to start the scheduler and see if solved,
If not remove the printer with lpadmin and declare it again

I've found some interesting things as of yesterday.
1. I can't even do a network connection to the printer via my own pc.
2. I don't see any LED activity on the NIC of the printer...suspect a card issue?
3. Did shutdown the system yesterday & it still wouldn't work.

you should have started by that! Yes, ping your printer...
So it looks like dead jetdirect card...
If not sometimes the printer can loose its network configuration (or someone disabled it...)

I've not done remote to network printers on 4.2 but your observation about the NIC may be the clue.

What is the name of the printer and host you are trying to print to, and can you print to it from your PC by using the host/printer names?

On later OS the info would be in /etc/printcap.

sorry guys, my mistake. should have pinged the printer first. I do have a spare jetdirect card. would it be ok just to do a direct replacement w/o having to configure everything or do i have to define the mac address of the replacement card??

printing btw from pc using host/printer names won't work as well.

thanks very much for all who have contributed to this thread.

Unless you are using bootp ( check in /etc/bootptab file) you dont need the mac address but you do need to configure the NIC again directly from the printer or using whatever its called (was jetadmin...) from HP
