UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

I hope someone can enlighten me on this. A few weeks ago, the root file system my UnixWare 7.1.1 server became corrupt so I ended up doing a full restore of the OS from tape backup.

Since then, after I get about 270 users on the system, the message "telnetd: all network ports in use" is displayed. The system is licensed for 380 users and ttys were increased when I first built the system, so I know that's not the issue.

Since there were many users on the system when the tape backup took place, I thought that maybe "/etc/utmp" and/or "/etc/wtmp" might be corrupt or just screwed up, so I cleared them both prior to rebooting.

What am I overlooking?? Any ideas??

you need to increase the number of pty 380. am not sure how you do this on unixware but on sun solaris, you put the following entry in /etc/system

set pt_cnt=380
set pt_max_pty=380

then reboot your server

Read the Unixware web site but basically you need to increase the number of pty to 380, so 380 users can login at time.
