gzip to another location
Hi all,

I have a file which is 180GB, we would want to use gzip to compress. However this particular location do not have enough space for gzip to perform.

How can we gzip this file into a diff location? Is there any command to do so?

Try this:

gzip filename > /desired-location-of-the-file

example:

gzip file1 > /tmp/temp

Hello,

i also have a doubt in this.The example which your showing is not working.i.e nothing is written in to the file(which is in different location).Its getting zipped in the same location itself.Could any one help us on this.

Also in the same manner ,how to extract the tar file in the different location.

See the "-c" switch in "man gzip".

Code:
gzip -c filename > /desired-location-of-the-file/filename2.Z

The question about "tar" needs context.
