Permissions to files using batch script.

Hi all,
I am using a batch script that ftps the compressed xml files to the Unix environment from the Windows environment and i perform this using the below line of coding:

echo cd %VAR_TR_FTP_DIR% > %TR_FTP_BATCH_FILE BatchNum%
Echo lcd "%VAR_TR_SOURCE_PATH_BatchNum%">> %TR_FTP_BATCH_FILE BatchNum%
Echo mput *.xml.gz>> %TR_FTP_BATCH_FILE BatchNum%
Echo chmod 777 *.gz>> %TR_FTP_BATCH_FILE BatchNum%
Echo quit>> %TR_FTP_BATCH_FILE BatchNum%
E:\ssa\Putty\psftp %UNIXUSERNAME%@%UNIXFTPSVR% -pw %UNIXPASSWORD% -b %TR_FTP_BATCH_FILE BatchNum% -bc

In the above line the chmod command is taking a lot of time since there are more than 6000 files which needs to be given permission using chmod.

In this case chmod is given for one file at a time. Is there any possibility to change the permission of all the files at a stretch which could save the time taken for the completion of script?

I tried another possibility to give the permission alone from Unix but had a problem while doing so.... While uncompressing the files at the unix environment i got an error "invalid compressed data"
Is it correct to transfer the files from Windows to UNIX environment and give the permissions alone to the files from UNIX environment?

Any help is greatly appreciated.
