What I'm trying to do is write a script in Perl to find a user and if that user exist it would print "User Exist, Pls Try Again". If The user doesn't exist I'm able to create a user with a password.

I basically want to login into different linux machines( on the same network) from a windows machine. I know i can use ssh <machine name>. But i want to automate this process. somehow my user names and groups on one of our machines are changed to numbers 700, 701, etc.
thus, i can only ssh into this machine as root.

When trying to change the password with the command "passwd" it returns that the user does not exist.
passwd <USER>
passwd: changing password for <USER>
