UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

Hi people its me again. Just reading some of the threads about people like myself newbies (god bless us). anyway the conundrum is. I only use unix at work and that has only been for the last 3 weeks. And i now find myself pondering wether or not to install in my machine at home. therein lies the probs. I no very very very little about this and would like some advice.

is it compatible with Mr Gates Software (already installed on own PC)
Problem solving and installation of hardware is it complicated.
And magazines that may help.

Dont have to tell you this is a big step for me.

No. You can't use programs that run on our dear Mr. Gate's platform unless you use an emulator like WINE (which is not very usable, most of the time) on some Unix flavours.

First step: partition your HDD. Shrink your HDD Windows partition with anything like partitionmagic to make space for new one.

Second step: Get the installation disks/discs for the Unix flavour you would like to use (most likely some distro of Linux or *BSD). Insert CD Rom/boot disk and reboot. Run install program. Install OS into the new partition.

Third step: Reboot and enjoy.
