ufsdump and ufsrestore in Solaris will get you back to where you need to be as far as OS is concerned (and most applications).

Where you would still have a problem is with Oracle or Sybase (or possibly other databases) as they have their own way of backing up their data (and a ufsdump/restore just doesn't do it).

Note that SUN only supports this if you do the ufsdump in single user mode.

Also, their are 3rd party applications you could use (Vertias Netbackup, Legato,...).

Try a search on this site...there are many posts about backups for both Solaris and AIX - if I remember correctly, AIX has some type of backup command that will save the OS to tape which can then be restored or booted (or that might have been HP-UX).

I read this the other day in my Linux Journal and it sounds like what you are looking for. I have not used it at all, so I can not give you any personal opinion on it.

On AIX , you could use the mksysb command which will create a bootable tape. The mksysb (make system backup) command creates an installable image of the root volume group, this command uses the tar command to create the system backup.

man mksysb for more info.

Cheers
