Hi,

I don't seem to get the exact problem. But something that always helped me out also using grep in the /etc/passwd file is the following :

grep dev /etc/group | awk -F: '{print $3}'

INTO

grep ^dev: /etc/group | awk -F: '{print $3}'

So when using this in a var it should be :

var=dev
grep ^${var}: /etc/group | awk -F: '{print $3}'

seems like homework to me... If Im wrong, tell me what on earth you would use this for.

If you need a specific user's group info just run:

#id

OR

# groups <username>

/shrug
