Question UNIX: 0403-027 The parameter list is too long
Hello All,

We have a batch job that clean old records. This run a script to back up file then delete. Unfortunately, this job been failing lately. This is the error we received.

"/usr/bin/compress: 0403-027 The parameter list is too long."
I am not sure if the job failed since its compressing too many files. Please advise what does this error really mean and the best solution for this.

I read from other threads that using "xargs" will solve this problem. Can I incorporate this "xargs" in the script? How?

Yes xargs might solve your issue, but to tell you how to use it is difficult since we dont know what is in your script...

If your command is something like this:
Code:
compress *

Replace it with
Code:
ls -1 |xargs compress

But if your command is something like one of
Code:
compress *.txt
compress 2009-*

Then you need to first use "find" (for the first example)
Code:

find . -name "*.txt" -print | xargs compress

I ran this script in AIX 5L environment and getting an error usr/bin/ls: 0403-027 The parameter list is too long Our administrator had increased the maxium allowable size of the ARG/ENV list but it still doesn't work.
