CPU & Memory

SmilieHI everybody!Smilie
Think of me as you would; mysticalpotato
I wish to get acquited with the wide SCSI wide world of servers and to do this I purchased a discontinued HP9000/G50 Print server from B-surplus a big fat boy 5'tall 200#+; 3x90MHZ cpu, 512 Cash, 3x256MB Main Memory, 2GB Tap drive, no HHD(s) & HP6000 SCSI SE $50us
Smilie
Now, I wish to get it all running, suppose I'll purchase an OS and HHD first... Which OS and HHD should I get? Smilie HI everybody!

Hello Penguins!
I had meant to post a thank you to the person who helped me out the other day. ~~~Thank You RTM~~~

personally....I am sick to death of windows, and a friend of mine installed linux on a 486, which is happily running it.
......so now I gotta have it too!!

a new adventure in computing!

since it is going to rain I figure I will attack the other computer all day...probably going to take me that long too....I am stuck on a mount point for the partitions now...so I will fiddle with that until I get it.
learn by doing I say!!

good luck to you...keep me posted!

Right on!

mysticalpotato Dude!

I remember working at Boeing some of the user commands in unix were same as Apple. Though,
don't get the wrong idea...

...right now as you see I'm way behind you.
Yeah, I wanna learn this stuff again and maybe then somebody might hire me for something over $10/hr.
So COOL! I need your configuration when you're booted up and running. Do you have a CD burner? I'll pay ya... or send ya a stack of blank disks
I need a 32 bit end plug monitor card as well.
Thought I'd get the system running in your type of system platform (486 or what ever), install the working system hard drive in the HP9000/G50
and monitor on LAN via telix or Telnet:// or ftp:// or what ever for now...

I'm looking into news servers too:
alt.unix.geeks, alt.os.linux.redhat, alt.uu.comp.os.linux.questions,
comp.os.linux.hardware,
comp.os.linux.networking,
comp.os.linux.redhat,
csu.unix.sun,
demon.ip.support.unix
Check it!

RE:

hi penguins
I will check out the info for sure.....thanks!

umm I haven't gotten mine up and running yet...I been busy and I don't want distractions at all once I start I will sit there for hours......so excuses excuses right??

and I don't remember anything at all about apple...not a thing...wish I did.
Here is some info for you.

"There are many different flavors or distrubution of Linux. At the core they are all very much the same thing. What differs is what applications they provide with the OS. They also differ in their methods of installation and updating.
For example, visit these sites.

Mandrake (http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/
Gentoo (http://www.gentoo.org/
Debian (http://www.debian.org/
Redhat (http://www.redhat.com
Slackware (http://www.slackware.org/

At each of these sites you can actually download the complete operating system. There are a few vendors out there that will sell you the OS on CDROM. As well in the back of most popular books about Linux is a CDROM with a version of Linux on it.

There are a ton of sites out there that can help you better understand what Linux is and how best to use it.......here are a few in no particular order:

http://www.linuxhq.org
http://www.linux.org
http://linuxapps.com/
http://portalux.com/

and then have a look at this
http://www.sitepoint.com/books/?bookid=learnDB

no need to send blanks to me...you can get it pretty much everywhere...I checked all of those sites and there is much info there for sure...and I bought my book at half price books and I know you have one of those where you are....cause I am very close to you <west coast> and the disks are in the back of all Linux books.

...like I said in previous posts.....I got an old sunsystem computer which should run it just fine and then.....the possibilites could be endless...who knows??? so many projects and so little TIME!

check those sites and see what you think. .I have 2 copies of linux I won't even use probably but they are not the latest and greatest so they may become coasters <smile> and as for your plans...I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work
