Help writing a script to find a file

I just started learning about Unix and I cant figure out what im doing wrong. I'm trying to write a script that will ask for the file name and tell what type it is. This is what i have so far.

Part to find a file in the current directory tree and tell the type
Code:
# $1 == file to find
find . -name "$1" |
while read filename
do
      echo "kind of file $(/usr/bin/file $filename)  directory: $(dirname $filename) name: $(basename $filename)"
done
