Help needed on sed command

Hi,

I am splitting a file based on pattern using sed -f command as below:

sed_cmd2 is the Pattern filename which has the below mentioned pattern in it:

#n
/\(.*\) \(.*\) \([Ss]mith\).*/w smith

Input file has following data
1 John Smith Chicago
2 Mary Smith New York
3 Judy Johnson Chicago
4 Mark George Los Angeles

so, the command sed -f sed_cmd2 inputfilename would split the file and places the data in smith as
1 John Smith Chicago
2 Mary Smith New York

Now the issue is how do I capture the results into any other file instead of smith.Redirection or change in name(smith to xyz) is not working.

Please provide me the solution.

TIA

what is it that you actually want to do? can you describe clearly again what your output would be?
