changing login prompt on redhat

Hi...

Can anyone help! I am in dire need to change the "login:" prompt to "username:" any ideas?

Hi, you need to edit the below two files with your new greeting..

/etc/issue
/etc/issue.net

Thats it.

HI Juilian,

I don't think it is possible other than to recompile /usr/bin/login, /usr/bin/telnet Smilie

I am not quiet sure, but I would really like to know it when this is posisble. You have other things you can change when looking at :

/etc/issue (Before getting the login prompt)
$PS1 (Ones logged in)

Hi again... on editing the files:

issue.net and issue. What do i need to put in there as it has kernal /r etc etc

That currently will outline your kernel version before you login, you can change this to what ever you want.

It would be an idea to backup the two files first.

Hi... thanks for that... I feel we are almost there! What do I need to put in there before it will change the login: to my preference: username: ?

Currently, when I cd to a directory I get the directory path in the command prompt, making it very long. I would like to change it so the path is not displayed.
