Question Tapes

Smilie
Hello!!
I am a new UNIX user, and I need to back up some files, I have some old ones and I have been trying to delete the old information with 'mt erase' but I don't be sure if it works, and 'mt resert' but the it gave a message suggesting me to use 'scsiha -r' (but the last one asked me for the file names and I did not have them, I tried to read them with ‘tar -t', ‘tar -tvvv' and ‘bru -tvv' nut all gave me error messages)
I don't know if there is a better solution!!!!
Thanks Smilie

hi there ,

Well if u tried to tar to the tape it should automatically overwrite what ever is there .
so u dont need to delette the one on the tape . now is it a very huge files or do u want to compress it first .
1st option using tar : compress :
for example u will back up and compress the directory /u/db
at /u directory

tar cvf - db | compress > filename
then the filename will be compress on the diretory
tar cv8 filename
this will copy the compress file to the tape

2nd option if it is a small file just copy it to tape, at the directory just type
tar cv8 *
this will just copy all files straight to tape

3rd option u can just go to administration shell and run backup utility .

regards
