What is the version of Solaris? What type of equipment are these tape drives ( single tape drives or library {jukebox})?

What software are you using?

First see what is in /dev/rmt. If you don't have anything (or not all the tape drives) then you can try the drvconfig, devlinks, tape commands to see if you configure them on the fly (instead of doing a boot -r ).

See the man page due to the fact I don't know your version (difference in commands mentioned in the man pages)

Hi I am running SunOS 5.8 on a V880 server.

The tape drive used is a HP Storage works Ultrium 1/8 autoloader. I guess this is using the library

Hi Denisca,

drvconfig;tapes;devlinks should do until Solaris 9
Solaris 8,9 and future releases also have fsadm, don't know the exact syntax.

When the drive is connected correct the above should work.
For changing hardware path's "/etc/path_to_inst" can be addapted, but please be very carefull in this last option.
