monitering servers in linux

how can i moniter the servers (e.g FTP, NNTP, APACHE) in linux.

well one way is to install a program called 'webmin' www.webmin.com, it has monitering features.

another way would be to write a simple script for the services you want to check. ie: have script run ftp yourserver
store the output and check for the status number, login is 220 i think.

there are numerous other ways to do this i am sure.

well i had a few minutes to spare, here is an extremely simple bash script that will test to see if ftp is running on my ftp server. please keep in mind that ive never written a bash script before i only have very basic knowledge in c++.

i am actually going to expand this script to check for my other services, http ssh smtp and pop3.

again this is short and if you wanted you could use this to base off of.

You want Nagios, which you may recognise as Netsaint - as it used to be known.

It seems to fit your bill, so give it a look.
