UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

Hi

I have recently joined a bank as a tester. Initially I will be working on some test scripts and then I will be testing their data warehouse using SQL and Unix. I do have a very basic knowledge and understanding of both unix and sql. I am not sure how I will be using Unix to test their servers.

I would really appreciate if you could provide any resources or links on how Unix can be used in the financial world for testing. Any help would be really appreciated thanks.

Also, could you direct me to where I can get a FREE shell account to practice my scripts. Thanks.

Plenty of tutorials are available on web. google it.
Try Cygwin or MinGw for window based shell emulators. They are free of
charge .

Another suggestion would be to get something like VMware Server, or the Sun virtual machine tool, or QEMU and set up a virtual machine, install a flavor of linux, and get the experience of fully managing such a system.
