Weird home key behavior

Hi there,

I'm using putty to connect to several servers. On every remote machine, the home key takes me at the beginning of a command line. Exept on one machine where a press on the home key outputs the tilde sign (~). Is there any place where I can override this behavior, I really prefer my home key to take me at the beginning of a command line.

PS: This is not software dependent, the same behavior is recorded using terminal window with ubuntu for example.
PPS: The same problem occurs with the End key.

Terminal type

I'd check the terminal type reported on the systems that work and compare them to what's reported on the machine that doesn't work.

Perhaps there's a disconnect between the two sets of terminal settings.

echo $TERM may help.
you could always change your habits and use CTRL-a to go to the beginning of the line and CTRL-e to go to the end.
other standard readline keybindings you may not be aware of:
ALT-f go forward one word
ALT-b go backwards one word
CTRL-w delete previous word

These are, I believe, emacs keybindings. If you are more used to vi then issue set -o vi at the command prompt, then you can use vi like keybindings.

Getting into those habits is better, in my opinion, especially when dealing with lots of different OS's as you never need to worry about putty's default configuration, as The control and alt keys are nearly always bound correctly. (I say nearly always just to cover myself, personally I have never come across a system where they haven't been, but I'm sure it's out there somewhere :~)

Great wempy!! Thank you so much!!
I'm used to shortcuts and I will definitely try to get used to those ones.
Is there any place where I can find a list of usualy available shortcuts.
By the way, echo $TERM output is the same on all my servers (including the one without home key support): xterm

man readline
will tell you all you need to know about input line editing and customisation and also lists the default keybindings
