Ms dork needs to learn unix in 4 days! M.I.?

Hi guys,

I've never seen or worked with unix. Always used microsoft products, from win nt 3.5 to win xp pro.

I have a problem, I have to learn unix in 4 days Smilie! I am serious, for my new job I have to learn the basics of unix, so I don't look like a complete dork out there.

The only hardware piece I have atm, is my Dell notebook p4 1.6 with 384 mb ram and 20 gig harddrive. I have windows xp pro installed, 2 partitions both formatted ntfs.

I am not sure what unix os to use, but I was thinking of freebsd.

I have a few questions, as this is completely new to me:

- is freebsd a good choice (I would like both gui and raw command stuff, something I can download for free)
- can I install unix os next to windows xp pro, if yes does it work on the second partition also formatted with ntfs. If no, what do you suggest I should do.
- anything else I forgot.

Any help appreciated !

Thanks in advance!

First, don't worry about looking like a complete dork - unless you lied on your interview/resume.

Second, start drinking coffee - you'll need all of those four days (and you'll still look like a dorkSmilie ).

Third, try this tutorial - it will help some.

Fourth, go through some of the FAQ's to learn what other resources are available.

Good luck.Smilie

Lastly, search the boards! There are tons of information regarding anything unix/linux you can imagine. Boards even contain other users like yourself who want to become a proficient in unix within a few days. There is even a poster that intends on becoming a unix god within 30 days!!! In any event, trade notes, questions and answers and you will surely become a unix user in no time. Good Luck.

Since you're going to give FreeBSD a go, which in my opinion is a very wise choice Smilie , have a look at the Handbook . It will definately make your journey through FreeBSD a whole lot easier.
