Question Unix and NT

Hello,

I'm relatively new to the whole Linux/Unix world, so please pardon me ignorance in some questions.

An associate of mine and I are having a rather heated debate about the origins of Unix and the Windows NT family. I say NT was spawned out of OS/2 and the fall out with IBM.

He says that OS/2 and NT were Unix variants, specifically a Unix flavor called Zenix. He sights the inclusion of the POSIX API in NT as his proof. As well as Microsoft's recent licensing deal with SCO.

I also feel that MS and SCO's license deal has ulterior motives, some of which are polictal in nature, but I don't think it was because NT has Unix imbedded in its core.

So, finally my question:
Which of us do you think is correct? And why?

Thanks in advance for any help provided.

Cheers,
CMF

yes

yes ibm os2/warp came 1st before win-nt os2 was working with dos befor ms was around. ms was working with drdos may be never heard of him
but bill bought doc dos copy rights then went and sold it to Ibm
and that was history now dos is very were did you know that windows base systems are still using 386 kernals LOL even then the new XP and server 2003 what a joke LOL unix is far beter and faster the ms by far just think of ms like the old saying were do you want to goto day ?
insted were don;t you want to goto day or
in a hanycap wheel cahir were do you want to goto day

point is that unix just works
i was a very big MS fan die hardcore but got very tired of there bs
so i'm a switcher to unix and never been happier mate once you switch you will not want to go back to MSSmilie

Actually I'm in the process of switching to Linux (Red Hat Distro V9.0). I'm doing a dual boot with RH and XP until I get RH to the point where I can use it exclusively.

At my current rate I think I've got another month left before I can remove the blight that is XP.

And I will agree with you on the performance issue. I thought I needed to upgrade my machine until I installed Linux. Now I wouldn't consider upgrading for at least another year or more. And on a student's budget that is some very good news.

Happy computing!
