I tried the code it is as follows:

can you try if this works?
in the above commnds mentioned instead of using \t enter <tab> directly
sed 's/<space>/<tab>/g' filename
# 17

I tried it. It is coming as follows.

-bash-3.00$ cat test.txt
1 2 3 4
5 6 7 8
a b c d
e f g h
-bash-3.00$ sed 's/<space>/<tab>/g' test.txt
1 2 3 4
5 6 7 8
a b c d
e f g h
-bash-3.00$ sed 's/ /<tab>/g' test.txt
1<tab>2<tab>3<tab>4
5<tab>6<tab>7<tab>8
a<tab>b<tab>c<tab>d
e<tab>f<tab>g<tab>h

What I've understood from the problem is my UNIX server doesn't recognize a tab delimiter or a tab at all.... I don't really know what the problem is.

I'm using SunOS.

Is there any way to simulate tab?
Please let me know.
