viewing spanish file in vi editor

hi,
I have a file in unix which contains spanish entries

When I try to open the file in vi editor i can see some spaces as shown below

when I ftp the same file and see in my machine i can see it clearly

what settings i can use while viewing the file in vi

plz find some snapshot of the file in vi

100000052|USB|MIN|ASH|GRYMETAL|1908/1909 15pc GLASS TOP|/GRAY METAL|Spanish 1908/1909 15pc G|LASS TOP/GRAY METAL|||
CULO DE PRUEBA PARA S|ELVA|||

actually there is no space between || and CULO in the file

Install and use vim, which is available here: welcome home : vim online

vim can handle different language sets and locales, offers spell checking, syntax hilighting, and full backwards vi compatibility (if desired).
