* problem

I have something like this:

x="hello * world~something"

I know for verbatim printing I need to do echo "$x", but I need also to cut just 1st field from the string (delimiter is ~).

I'm trying to do something like:
echo $(echo "$x" | cut -d~ -f1)
but it does not work.

10x in advance for any help. Radu.

why double 'echo'?
you also need to quote '~' to prevent the shell expansion.
Code:
#!/bin/ksh

x="hello * world~something"
echo "$x" | cut -d'~' -f1

I created a text file (lineOfText) with the single line:
Quote:
hello * world~something
Then ran a couple of simple commands to do this split:
Code:
bash-3.00# awk -F~ '{print $1}' lineOfText
hello * world
bash-3.00# cut -d'~' -f1 lineOfText
hello * world

To run inside a script, a simple echo "$var" | command does the trick:
Code:
bash-3.00# cat test
#!/usr/bin/sh

var="hello * world~something"
echo "$var" | awk -F~ '{print $1}'
echo "$var" | cut -d'~' -f1

Code:
bash-3.00# ./test
hello * world
hello * world

Failing to put quotation marks around $var result in a listing of all of the files in the current directory....

Code:
#!/usr/bin/sh

var="hello * world~something"
echo $var | awk -F~ '{print $1}'
echo $var | cut -d'~' -f1

Code:
bash-3.00# ./test
hello testfile1 testfile2 testfile3 lineOfText test world
hello testfile1 testfile2 testfile3 lineOfText test world

actually I've simplified it a bit: I need to assing echo "$x" | cut -d'~' -f1 to a variable, then echo it; that's why the double echo

in my hp-ux it seems cut works with ~ unquoted

right; my problem is that I need to assign the result to a var then echo it;
like:
Code:
var="hello * world~something"
var2=`echo "$var" | awk -F~ '{print $1}'`

echo $var2

why do you need a double 'echo' to do the assignment?
Code:
#!/bin/ksh

x="hello * world~something"
y=$(echo "$x" | cut -d'~' -f1)
echo "y->[${y}]"

must be a weird shell and/or you don't have anything in your $HOME directory.... It must be quoted.
